DANIELS NAMED ATLANTIC 10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – For four years now, Head Coach Shaka Smart has been touting Troy Daniels as the best shooter he's ever coached. This past month and particularly this past week, it was clear to everyone that Smart was not exaggerating.
Daniels broke his own school record and set a new Atlantic-10 record for three-pointers with 11 against ETSU on Wednesday. His career performance helped Daniels secure A10 Player of the Week accolades, the first-ever for a Ram.
"It's really a credit to my teammates. They continually find me for open shots and trust me to make them," Daniels said. "The coaches have given me a process to follow all year long and it's just a matter of following that process. The extra work that I've been putting is really paying off lately and I just want to continue focusing on the process at hand."
For this week, the Roanoke, Va. native averaged 22 points and seven rebounds, while shooting 48.4 percent from the field and knocked down 14 three-pointers.
His highlight performance came on Wednesday night at ETSU when he poured in a career-high 33 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. In addition, he posted the top three-point shooting performance in all Division I games since 2009 when he drilled 11 three-pointers.
Daniels followed his record-setting performance on Wednesday with another double-digit performance in a home win over Lehigh (11 pts and four rebounds). His three-pointer with just over two minutes to play put VCU up 55-51 and helped seal its ninth straight victory.
For the year, Daniels is second on the squad with 13.9 ppg, while also corralling 3.5 rebounds per night. His 64 three-pointers rank as the second most treys in the country next to Oakland's Travis Bader (66).
Daniels and his teammates open up their inaugural Atlantic 10 conference slate on Wednesday night when the Flyers of the University of Dayton visit the Siegel Center.
