RICHMOND, Va. – Less than 24 hours after posting their fourth straight victory, the VCU men's basketball program continued its success, this time it was in the local Richmond community.
Players, coaches and members of the Rams' support staff spent Sunday afternoon spreading some holiday cheer with 25 children from the local Boys & Girls Club as the Second Annual "Shop with the Rams" went down as a big hit.
"During the year, our guys are so focused on school and basketball, so this allows them to step back and really appreciate what we have," Head Coach Shaka Smart said. "A lot of these kids really look up to our guys, so it's great to be able to spend some time with them, especially during the holiday season."
After getting a tour of the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center, the children boarded transportation provided by James Limousine and headed to a nearby Target to get into some shopping and good times with the VCU basketball program.
"It's really something we look forward to and really enjoy spending time with these kids," sophomore Rob Brandenberg said. "The whole Richmond community has been an unbelievable support system for our program and we hope this is just a small way we are able to repay them."
Each child was given a $100 gift card and was escorted by players, coaches and staff members throughout the store to find all their holiday needs. After the shopping was completed, the kids dug into a nice meal and spent some time with the players and coaches.
