LUTZ, Fla. – Sophomore Adam Ball (Richmond, Va.) birdied carded a first-round 68 to spur tournament leader VCU at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship at TPC Tampa Bay.
Ball birdied holes 16 and 17 to vault into a first-place tie with St. Bonaventure's Josh Stauffer at 3-under par. The VCU sophomore jumped out to a blistering start and shot 32 on the front nine after birdying Nos. 6, 7 and 9. He recorded six birdies on the day.
VCU (+2), the A-10 preseason favorite, has jumped out to a six-stroke lead on second-place Richmond (+8) and a 15-stroke margin on third-place Dayton (+17).
Ball was one of four Rams in the top 11. Senior Matt Ball Jr. (Richmond, Va.) shot 71 on the 6,898-yard, par-71 layout, while senior Rocky Khara (Sebring, Fla.) was 1-over at 72. Freshman Enej Sarkanj (Maribor, Slovenia) continued his outstanding rookie campaign. He is tied for 11th after firing 75 in the opening round.
