LA JOLLA, Calif. – Former VCU star John Rollins' 2012 season is off to an outstanding start.

Rollins (-14) fired a final round 71 Sunday and finished two strokes off the pace to take third at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Brandt Snedeker (-16) defeated Kyle Stanley on the second hole of a sudden death playoff to win the tournament.
It's Rollins' second top-10 finish in three events this season. The Richmond, Va. native placed 10th at the Sony Open in Hawaii two weeks ago. Sunday's finish earned him $408,000 and pushed his career earnings to nearly $16 million. The performance marked Rollins' best since he took second at the Travelers Championship on June 26, 2011.
At the Farmers, Rollins (70-65-68-71=274) vaulted into contention on the event's second day when he fired a blistering 7-under 65. He was sharp on Saturday as well, carding a 4-under 68 to move into a second place tie entering Sunday's final round.
Rollins' remained in contention throughout Sunday, but was slowed by back-to-back bogies Nos. 7 and 8. He steadied himself to shoot 35 on the back nine, birdying No. 16, a 227-yard par 3, after stroking his tee shot within a foot of the pin.
During his collegiate career, Rollins led VCU to its first two CAA Championships in 1996 and 1997. He was named the league's Player of the Year at the conclusion of both seasons and captured the CAA Championship individual crown in 1996 at Lane Tree in Goldsboro, N.C.
