MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – Junior Marc Dobias (Lausanne, Switzerland) provided Virginia Commonwealth University's highlight of the day with a second-round 69 Monday at the VCU Shootout at Hermitage Country Club.
VCU currently sits 12th overall at 6-over. The Rams lead Colonial Athletic Association rivals Old Dominion (+11), defending Shootout and league-champion UNC Wilmington (+13) and James Madison (+18). After a shaky first round, the Black and Gold shot 1-under in the afternoon on Hermitage's par 72, 6,955-yard Manakin Course.
Virginia paced the field through 36 holes at 17-under. Virginia Tech (-14) is three strokes back, followed by East Carolina (-13), Iowa State (-12) and Wichita State (-10). Scott Fernandez of Iowa State, sparked by three eagles, sits atop the individual leaderboard at 9-under. Denny McCarthy of Virginia (-8) and Harold Varner of East Carolina (-7) remain within striking distance.
Dobias (75-69=144) is tied for 28th with teammate Chase Sargent (Orlando, Fla.) (72-72=144) and a host of others at Even par. Dobias was particularly efficient on par 5s, where he was 4-under Monday. Only five players averaged fewer strokes on those holes than Dobias' 4.50. Sargent fired seven birdies Monday. Sophomore Rocky Khara (Sebring, Fla.) (75-72=147) is currently 52nd overall for VCU.
Final round play begins Tuesday with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat.
