PINEHURST, N.C. – Freshman Rocky Khara (Sebring, Fla.) and junior Chase Sargent (Orlando, Fla.) led a final round charge as Virginia Commonwealth University placed second at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship Sunday at Pinehurst No. 8.
The Rams, who entered the day in third place, shot a 4-over 292 for the day, the best round by any team in the tournament. However, it was not enough to catch UNC Wilmington, which held on for a 10-stroke victory. The Seahawks finished 18-over (294-293-295=882) for the 54-hole tournament. VCU (304-296-292=892) was 28-over, while George Mason placed third (+29), James Madison was fourth (+38) and Old Dominion finished fifth (+45).
Khara (pictured, left) punctuated his best performance of the season with a final round 72 on Sunday and placed second overall at 1-over (74-71-72=217). UNCW's Josh Brock claimed individual medalist honors at 2-under par (72-71-71=214).
Meanwhile, Sargent carded a blistering 68 Sunday on the 7,092-yard, par 72 layout to earn a share of fifth place in the individual standings. Sargent finished with a flurry, eagling the 500-yard, par 5 17th hole before recording a birdie on No. 18. Sunday's 68 is Sargent's best round of the season.
Also for the Rams, freshman Matt Ball Jr. (Richmond, Va.) placed ninth overall at 8-over (75-76-73=224), while senior Mark Jargen (Helsingborg, Sweden) tied for 28th overall.
VCU has placed no worse than third in the last three CAA Championships and in six of the last seven.
