KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – For the second straight week, senior Mark Jargren (Helsingborg, Sweden) paced Virginia Commonwealth University, which placed 11th Sunday at the Irish Creek Collegiate at The Club at Irish Creek.
Jargren, making his 40th career start for the Rams, tied for 30th place with a 54-hole total of 221 (74-74-73), 8-over par. On Sunday, Jargren negotiated the 7,099-yard, par 71 course to the tune of a final-round 73, his best outing of the tournament.
VCU totaled 892 strokes (+40) for the weekend. Seventeenth-ranked Duke captured the team title with 844. Wake Forest was seven strokes back, followed by Louisville (856), Middle Tennessee State (865) and Kennesaw State (866) rounding out the top five.
Matt Ball Jr. (Richmond, Va.), the Rams' leader in scoring average, placed 46th overall after firing a final-round 75 on Sunday. Ball totaled 224 (76-73-75) strokes in three rounds. Freshman Rocky Khara (Sebring, Fla.) was 59th for VCU (227).
Wake Forest's Lee Bedford captured individual medalist honors at 10-under, while Jason Millard of Middle Tennessee State and Jeff Karlsson of Kennesaw State finished tied for second, three strokes off the pace.
The Rams will have a week off before heading to Pinehurst No. 8 for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships in Pinehurst, N.C. April 22-23. The Rams will be seeking their league-record ninth CAA Championship. VCU last won the title in 2009.
