CAMBRIDGE, Md. – Seniors Rafael Campos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg, Va.) posted top-five performances to lead Virginia Commonwealth University to a second-place, albeit heartbreaking, finish at the University of Maryland Intercollegiate Sunday at the Par 71 River Marsh Golf Club.

North Carolina earned a one-stroke victory when it surged past VCU in Sunday's third and final round. The Tarheels shot a combined 1-under par on the final 18 holes to erase a seven-stroke VCU advantage. North Carolina (849) and VCU (850) were followed by N.C. State (858), Virginia (862) and Kent State (865).

Campos (-3) finished third in the individual standings, four strokes off the lead. Griffin (-2) was fourth overall. Also for the Rams, senior Vincent Nadeau (Penhook, Va.) placed 13th at 3-over, while sophomore Chase Sargent (Orlando, Fla.) tied for 14th at 4-over.

VCU shot a tournament-low 275 in Saturday's second round, positioning the Rams for their first victory of the 2009-2010 season, but North Carolina carded Sunday's best round by four strokes to steal the win.

The Black and Gold return to fall action when the Rams host the VCU Shootout at Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va. Sept. 28-29.
