NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - VCU Field Hockey's Emily McNamara has been named the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week after scoring three goals in two games at the River Hawk Classic.
McNamara scored both of the Rams goals on Friday against Hofstra. During the game, she also recorded a team-high 11 shots with eight shots on goal. McNamara opened the scoring against Hofstra game with a goal in the 13th minute. Bentley Zabicki passed the ball across the front of the cage and found McNamara at the back post for a tap-in goal. McNamara's second goal was socred on penalty corner after Svea and Maite Sturm inserted and stick-stopped the corner before McNamara's one-time shot found the back of the cage. VCU and Hofstra were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation but the Pride won 3-2 after the penalty shootout.
On Sunday against Bryant, McNamara's goal pushed VCU's lead to 2-0 in the 38th minute as she collected a rebounded effort and was able to tap it into the goal. McNamara recorded four total shot attempts in the game and the Rams won 2-1.
The honor marks the fifth time that McNamara has been named the A-10 Player of the Week during her career. McNamara was also named to the 2018 A-10 Preseason All-Conference team on Aug. 20.
In their next match, VCU hosts American on Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. at Cary Street Field in its home opener. Admission is free to all home VCU Field Hockey matches.
