NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Emily McNamara, Svea Sturm and Maite Sturm were all named to the All-Atlantic 10 Preseason First Team as announced by the conference office on Monday. The Rams were also picked fourth in the A-10 Coaches Poll.

McNamara is coming off a season in which she set the school record for goals (21) and points (51). McNamara was named to the NFHCA All-South Region Second Team and the A-10 First Team after she led the A-10 in goals scored, total points (51) and shots (127) in 2017. McNamara also ranked third in the conference in assists (9). McNamara earned A-10 Player of the Week honors three times and ranked in the top five nationally in Division I in goals per game and points per game at the end of the regular season.

Maite earned A-10 All-Rookie Team honors and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Championship Team. Maite scored six goals during the regular season and added an assist. She scored a goal against both Villanova and Drexel and added two goals for VCU in a win at Richmond. She also scored a goal against LIU-Brooklyn and Davidson while adding an assist in the win against St. Francis (Pa.). Maite also earned an A-10 Rookie of the Week honor. 

Svea earned All-Atlantic 10 Second Team honors as well as All-Rookie Team honors after scoring seven goals last season. Svea scored two goals in VCU's win over Villanova and scored a hat trick against LIU-Brooklyn. She also added a goal against Ohio and La Salle. Svea tied for 13th in the A-10 in goals scored (7).

The Rams went 14-6 in 2017 and recorded the second-most wins in program history. The Rams tied for second in the A-10 regular season standings and earned the No. 4 seed for the Atlantic 10 Championships. VCU will begin the 2018 season on Aug. 24 as the Rams face Hofstra at a neutral site tournament at UMass-Lowell.
