RICHMOND, Va. – VCU Field Hockey's Chessa Kownurko was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week and Maite Sturm was named the A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.

Kownurko and Sturm played major roles in helping VCU get off to its first 2-0 start since the 2012 season. Kownurko made 15 saves on the weekend and only allowed one goal while Sturm scored the game-winning goal against Drexel on Aug. 25 in her collegiate debut and added another one against Villanova on Aug. 27.

Kownurko and the Rams shutout Drexel in a 1-0 win. She made five total saves including a diving stop on a penalty stroke with less than five minutes remaining to preserve the victory over the Dragons. Against the Wildcats, Kownurko made 10 saves in the cage for VCU including a save on a penalty stroke. She has saved both penalty stroke attempts taken against her this season.

Sturm scored in her collegiate debut and broke the 0-0 deadlock after a penalty corner from Maite Sturm bounced around before ending up on her stick and a quick shot beat the keeper. On Sunday, Sturm scored her second goal of the weekend and her career against Villanova as she found the top left corner of the goal in the 49th minute to push the score to the final margin to 5-1.

The Rams will play their next match on the road on Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. against Longwood.
