RICHMOND, Va. – VCU head field hockey coach Stacey Bean has announced the signing of two student-athletes to their National Letter of Intent.
Maite and Svea Sturm, a set of twins, have both signed with VCU and will join the Rams this fall from Germany. The duo brings a wealth of international experience that includes playing in the top leagues of Europe such as the Bundesliga. They have also won eight collective Juvenile Western German WHV Championships in both indoor and outdoor field hockey since 2013.
"I am excited to welcome Maite and Svea to the VCU Field Hockey family. They possess a tremendous work rate on the pitch and a competitive edge. Given their high hockey IQ and championship pedigree, I fully expect Maite and Svea to make an immediate impact on the field," Bean said.
Since 2013, The Sturm sisters have played in eight Juvenile German Indoor Hockey Championships, five indoor and three field, and have played in five finals. They helped their team to two championships during that time in addition to a runner-up finish and two third place finishes.
The Sturm's have both appeared in several Bundesliga games, one of the top adult leagues in Germany. They have competed in both the first and second divisions of the German Field Hockey league since the spring of 2016 with Hockey-und Tennisclub Uhlenhorst (HTCU). Both were members of the inaugural ladies' team of HTCU.
Their team, Duisburgs of the Club Raffelberg, finished first in the German Juvenile Championship Field Hockey in 2016. The pair also led their HTCU team to first place at the Western German WHV Indoor Field Hockey Championship in February 2016 and the DHB Field Hockey Championship in 2016. They played their first Bundesliga match in the fall of 2016 and have won numerous other German league youth championships.
