RICHMOND, Va. – Six home games and three games against NCAA Tournament teams highlight the 2014 VCU Field Hockey schedule, announced by Head Coach Laura Baker on Tuesday.
"We've put together a schedule that will test us both at home and on the road," Baker said. "The early road tests will definitely prepare us for another tough Atlantic 10 slate. We look forward to the challenge."
After hosting Georgetown for a scrimmage on August 18, the Rams hit the road for five straight to open the year. VCU opens the year at Drexel on August 29 before heading to Liberty (Sept. 5), Longwood (Sept. 7), Central Michigan (Sept. 12) and Michigan (Sept. 14).
VCU's home opener is set for Sept. 19 when it hosts intracity rival Richmond at 5 p.m. A week later, in-state rival James Madison visits Cary Street Field on Sept. 26. Defending Atlantic 10 Champion UMass rounds out the three game homestand on Sept. 28 at 12 p.m.
VCU will face a test with five of the next six games coming on the road, including North Carolina (Oct. 12), which advanced to the Final Four last season. The Rams will also travel to La Salle (Oct. 3), Saint Joseph's (Oct. 5), Towson (Oct. 17) and St. Francis (Oct. 19). The lone home game during the stretch is against Saint Louis on October 10.
William and Mary and Lock Haven close out the Rams' home slate on October 24 and 26, while road games against Davidson (Oct. 31) and Appalachian State (Nov. 2) finish the regular season.
The Rams look to advance to the conference tournament for the third consecutive season, and fourth in the past five years.
