NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior Kelsey Scherrer of the VCU Field Hockey team may only stand at 5'1", but her presence on the field resembles that of Shaquille O'Neal on the basketball court.
Scherrer has been a driving force behind the Rams' record-breaking start to the 2012 campaign and her stellar play was recognized when the Atlantic 10 Conference named her Player of the Week on Monday.
The Chesapeake, Va. native scored two goals and added an assist in VCU's two road wins over Davidson and Appalachian State this past weekend. The Rams are now 6-0 for the first time in school history and are one of just four teams remain unbeaten.
Scherrer's goal against Davidson on Friday night gave her the all-time career points lead, breaking a tie with Alycia Yoder's record of 97, which stood for 18 years.
Her three-point day on Sunday against App. State pushed her into uncharted territory. She became the first player in VCU history to reach 100 career points, currently sitting at 102 points in her four seasons with the Black & Gold.
Scherrer and the Rams are back in action this weekend for two more road games. Friday, VCU heads to Towson, followed by a Sunday afternoon showdown at Drexel.
