RICHMOND, Va. – All preseason long, the VCU Field Hockey coaching staff have talked about the talent and depth at the forward position for the Black & Gold.

The rest of the coaches in the conference apparently feel the same way too. Junior Kelsey Scherrer and sophomore Emilie Soares, the top two forwards for the Rams, were both honored with Preseason All-CAA accolades on Wednesday evening.

Scherrer was named to the Preseason All-CAA First Team, while Soares earned Honorable Mention honors.

"This is the first time since we've been here that we really have a lot of talented depth at the forward position," Head Coach Kelly McQuade said. "Kelsey and Emilie are two of our biggest threats offensively and we're really leaning on them to be leaders both on and off the field this fall."

Scherrer has been a force along the frontline since her arrival to VCU three years ago. The Chesapeake, Va. native has been named to All-CAA squads every season and ranks in the top-10 in school history in goals (26), assists (13) and points (65) for her career.

Last fall, the junior was fourth in the league in goals (15) and ninth in assists (8). She also finished third in the CAA in points with 38.

After scoring six goals and tallying two assists during her freshman year, Soares was named to the 2010 CAA All-Rookie squad. Her six goals was the fifth most by any freshman in VCU history.

The Black & Gold open up their 2011 regular season slate on Friday evening when they head to Charlottesville for a 5 p.m. battle against third-ranked Virginia.
