RICHMOND, Va. – While you were chomping down on a couple Krispy Kreme donuts and shooting the breeze in the coffee room at work this morning, the VCU Field Hockey team had already run two miles and were headed for skill work.

Don't feel bad, it's just how preseason is for the Black & Gold who got things kicked off today in preparation for their upcoming fall campaign.

"I'm so excited to being another year with this program," Head Coach Kelly McQuade said. "We had some team meetings yesterday and seeing everyone back and ready to get started, really rejuvenated me. I'm really looking forward to seeing how we grow not only as individuals but also as a team."

McQuade is entering her fifth season as the mastermind behind the Rams resurgence at Cary Street Field. Shannon Karl, a former teammate of McQuade's at William & Mary, is also back for her fifth season as an assistant coach.

The duo led the Rams to 13 wins last fall, the second-most in program history, and took VCU back to the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2003. For her efforts, McQuade was named VaSID State Coach of the Year, as well as the CAA Coach of the Year.

VCU returns eight starters from last year's squad, including leading goal scorer Kelsey Scherrer and netminder Erin Jablonski. Both of whom were named captains for this upcoming season.

The Black & Gold will spend nearly three weeks in preseason camp before hosting Radford University in an exhibition match on Saturday, August 20th at 1 p.m.
