VCU FIELD HOCKEY RELEASES 2011 SCHEDULE
RICHMOND, Va. – NCAA semifinalist and intra-state rival Virginia, as well as Colonial Athletic Association champion Old Dominion highlight the 2011 VCU Field Hockey Schedule, released Thursday.
VCU will open its home schedule on Saturday, Aug. 27 when it hosts Appalachian State on the Cary Street Turf at 2 p.m. The Rams will host cross-town rival Richmond on Sept. 9. VCU's 2-1 overtime victory over the Spiders last season sparked a 13-win campaign.
Non-conference dates with Big Ten stalwarts Northwestern (Sept. 2) and Penn State (Sept. 18), Albany (Sept. 3), Davidson (Sept. 11), Longwood (Sept. 15), Pacific (Oct. 9) and Columbia (Oct. 16) also highlight the schedule.
The Rams open CAA action on Sept. 23 against Towson at Cary Street Field at 7 p.m. Home contests with Drexel (Sept. 25) and Delaware (Oct. 30) are also of note. The Black and Gold will take on defending league champion Old Dominion on Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. in Norfolk, Va.
Led by fifth-year Head Coach Kelly McQuade, the Rams are coming off a 13-7 campaign, the school's best since the 1992 season. The 13 victories represent the second-most in program history. VCU returns All-CAA forward Kelsey Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.) as well as the bulk of its starting lineup.
