RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore Kelsey Scherrer (Chesapeake, Va.), who provided the heroics in Virginia Commonwealth University's overtime win over James Madison on Friday, was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Co-Player of the Week on Monday.
Scherrer, a 5-1 forward, tipped in a hard through ball from senior Marle van Dessel (Oisterwijk, Netherlands) to give the Rams a 4-3 victory over the Dukes, their first in the series since 2004.
The goal was Scherrer's second of the match. She intercepted a loose ball deep in the JMU zone and scored in the second minute to give the Rams a 1-0 advantage. Scherrer also assisted on another goal.
Scherrer leads VCU with nine goals and 22 points this season and is closing in on last season's totals of 11 goals and 27 points. Scherrer has scored the game-winning goal in five of the Rams' nine victories this season.
VCU (9-4, 4-1 CAA) will step out of conference for its next contest, a Wednesday, Oct. 13 meeting with Longwood at Cary Street Field at 6 p.m.
