RICHMOND – Baseball's Brooks Vial was honored on Thursday afternoon, as he was one of 14 recipients of the Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship for 2017. Each of the leagues' 14 member institutions had one graduating student-athlete named to this list, with Vial earning the honor on behalf of VCU as announced by the A-10.
Vial is a three-time Dean's List and Athletic Director's recipient and was awarded with the Michael Brown Memorial Award which is given to the best all-around student-athlete in the senior class at VCU. In 2016, he was an Atlantic 10 Player of the Week twice, as well as Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week once. Vial served as a mentor for high school students who were looking to enter into the allied health field. He was a part of the Health Science Academy on campus and he also volunteered with Richmond's R.B.I. program and the Miracle League.
To be considered for the Postgraduate Scholarship, student-athletes must have performed with distinction both in the classroom and in their respective sports throughout their career, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community. The postgraduate program, which began in 1991 honoring one male and one female student-athlete, first expanded to four recipients in 1997 and then to 10 in 2014.
All 14 honorees will receive $5,000 to contribute towards full-time enrollment in a graduate or professional program. Designed to provide graduating student-athletes the opportunity to continue their college education, the program awards $70,000 in scholarship funding to former A-10 student-athletes. This marks the third straight year the Atlantic 10 has provided the scholarship to 14 individuals, and over the past six years, the A-10's Postgraduate Scholarship program has awarded over $250,000 to 64 former student-athletes.
