RICHMOND – Senior Sam Donko of the VCU Baseball team was named the Virginia Lottery Student Athlete of the Week for his accomplishments this past week.
Donko became the all-time leader in career saves for the program in a win at Fordham Saturday afternoon. He notched save number 31 for his career, passing Adam Bryant on the all-time list for the top spot, which Bryant held since 1994.
“It’s pretty cool. I take a lot of pride in being available everyday. The thing I’m most impressed with in myself is how I have been able to do that. The coaching staff has been great keeping me in shape and allowing me to do that. Plus, the rest of the guys on the team, both offensively and defensively, have played great and allowed me to be in those situations to come in late and save games.”
The Rams have also been on a role, winning six straight games that included a series win over Davidson, a win over VMI, and a three-game sweep on the road at Fordham.
“We are obviously pitching very well. All of our starters – Brooks [Vial], Sean [Thompson], Michael [Dailey] - have been great, especially Brooks who haven’t given up a run in a while. Then our hitters have been big, especially the freshman. They have done well in key situations for us.”
The “Get In The Truck” mentality has led the Rams to a 25-15 record overall, and a 13-2 Atlantic 10 record, good enough for first place in the conference.
“It [Get In The Truck] means it’s time to go. Let’s wrap things up. It all started from a vine. But ever since then, it just sort of stuck. I’m surprised it’s lasted so long.”
