RAMS EARN No. 4 SEED IN ATLANTIC 10 TOURNAMENT
Newport News, Va. – After a 34-18 regular season and a 15-10 mark in conference play, VCU is headed to the 2014 Atlantic 10 as the fourth-seeded team. The Rams will begin play in the tournament at 10 a.m. (CT) on Wednesday at the Billiken Sports Complex where they will take on No. 5 seed Richmond.
During the regular season the Black and Gold posted a 6-5 mark against the field; with series wins over No. 2 seed Saint Joseph's and No. 5 seed Richmond.
Defending champion Saint Louis has claimed the top-seed in the 2014 Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Championship which is set to begin Wednesday at SLU's Billiken Sports Complex in St. Louis.
Saint Louis finished its regular season A-10 slate with an 18-7-1 record to take the top spot. The Bills are currently 32-19-1 overall and will receive a first day bye in the Championship. This marks the third consecutive season that SLU has either won or shared the top spot in the final regular season A-10 standings.
Saint Joseph's nabbed the second seed following an 18-8 record in league play and posting a 33-14 overall regular season mark. The Hawks smashed its previous program records of 26 overall wins and 13 A-10 victories.
George Mason will be making its first appearance in the A-10 Baseball Championship after joining the league last July. Mason finished its first year in the conference with a 16-9 record against A-10 foes, while the Patriots are currently 30-20 overall.
VCU will be the fourth-seed in its first appearance in the A-10 Championship after ending its second\ year in the league 15-10 in A-10 play and currently stand at 34-18.
Richmond (24-26-1) earned the fifth seed with a 13-12 A-10 record, while Dayton will be the sixth seed after finishing the season 14-13 in league play and 24-28 overall. Fordham earned the seventh seed with a 13-14 A-10 mark and 23-28 overall.
Crosstown rivals VCU and Richmond will open the seven team Championship on Wednesday. First pitch of game one is slated for 10:00 a.m. (CT), with the winner moving on to play Saint Louis at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. SJU and Fordham will meet at 1:30 p.m. (CT) in game two, while George Mason and Dayton will square off in game three at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday's nightcap will feature the losers of games one and two in an elimination contest starting at 8:30 p.m. (CT)
The Saint Louis University Department of Athletics in conjunction with the Atlantic 10 will host a FREE community youth baseball clinic on Saturday, May 24 at the Billiken Sports Center. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the clinic running 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (CT) The clinic is open to all children ages 8-12 and will cover the fundamentals of baseball including hitting, fielding and throwing. The FREE clinic is open to the first 60 kids, so apply soon! Clinic participants will receive a FREE A-10 drawstring backpack and FREE admission to the 2014 Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Championship game that will be played following the clinic.
