THE BASICS: VCU's three-run fourth inning broke the game open giving the Rams a 4-0 lead. The Black and Gold tacked on another run in the seventh to secure a 5-2 win closing out the season 34-18 with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the third, freshman Matt Davis drew a walk to put just the game's second base runner aboard. A senior Nick Octavi sac bunt pushed Davis to second and sophomore Cody Acker put runners on first and third with a single to left field. The next hitter, senior Joey Cujas flared a sacrifice fly bringing Davis home and giving the Rams a 1-0 edge.
  • VCU tacked on another run when a Fordham error allowed junior Vimael Machin to come home and score in the fourth. Senior Trevor Marino doubled the Black and Gold run total with a two-RBI single later in the frame.
  • Fordham cut the VCU lead in half, 4-2, with a two run fifth inning getting back-to-back RBI from Brenden Maghini and Ian Edmiston.
  • Consecutive hits from Octavi and Acker drove in Davis in the seventh increasing VCU's lead out to 5-2.
  • VCU only allowed one more hit the rest of the way, closing out the game with a 5-2 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • In a pitch count shortened start, Daniel Concepcion went 3.0 innings, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out two. With the win the junior improved to 5-3 on the year.
  • In the six innings following, VCU used three different pitchers out of the bullpen. Sophomore Matt Jamer, junior Thomas Gill and senior Seth Greene each threw two innings of work.
  • As a whole the bullpen allowed one earned run on four hits to shut the door on a Fordham comeback.
  • Greene pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
  • Acker's recorded three hits in the season finale. In the regular season the sophomore posted 18 multiple hit contests which is tied for the team lead.
  • Marino went 2-for-4 from the dish driving in two runs in the win.

QUOTABLE

It was a great job by the guys getting through a tough situation to get a win on the road especially with the tough schedule to weather and Fordham's graduation. The guys did a great job staying focused and they were able to get one here.

VCU Head Coach Shawn Stiffler

It's great to have Cody Acker back in the lineup after two weeks of him being out of the lineup. He really had a great weekend here; his three hits today were key in the game.

We got an opportunity to get the rest of our bullpen on the mound tonight and they were phenomenal. Matt Jamer, Thomas Gill and Seth Greene were all fabulous in the back end of the game so hats off to them. As a whole they struck out eight and just walked one and we really couldn't have asked for more out of them.

We want to say thank you to all of our fans and all the people who supported us along the way, it was a great season and a great job by our guys. Now we get a chance to look forward to postseason play and we're 0-0 once again. Our goal now is to not to lose twice from here on out. We've got a lot to do before Wednesday but the guys are excited and it should be an exciting tournament. Go Rams!
