THE BASICS: After dropping a tight contest on Friday night, the Rams responded with their 11th double-digit run performance of the year knocking off La Salle 11-1. Junior starting pitcher Matt Blanchard stood tall on the mound, going 7.2 strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out four. Offensively the Rams got multiple RBI performances out of Cody Acker, Logan Farrar and Trevor Marino.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Senior Bill Cullen led off the second inning with a double down the left field line. The center fielder then moved to third on a throwing error by the Explorers shortstop. The next batter, freshman Logan Farrar, drove in the first run on an RBI fielder's choice.
  • In the following inning sophomore Cody Acker's base hit up the middle opened the frame. Back-to-back wild pitches moved the outfielder to third base. A sophomore James Bunn walk put runners on the corners for junior Vimael Machin. The Rams shortstop roped a double into left to plate Acker and push the Rams out to a 2-0 edge.
  • VCU added two more runs in the frame, on an RBI double off the bat of Cullen and a sac fly from freshman Matt Davis.
  • La Salle got a run back in the top of fourth with an RBI groundout from Justin Korenblatt, scoring Kevin Baron.
  • The Black and Gold put another run on the board on a Bunn slicing RBI single in to right-center field to score senior Trevor Marino.
  • VCU loaded the bases in the fifth inning after not recording a hit to set the table for a Farrar RBI groundout, making the score 6-1 in favor of the Rams. Marino followed up with an RBI single of his own and a two-out two-RBI single from Acker increased the Black and Gold's lead to 9-1.
  • The Rams tacked on two more in the sixth with RBI from Farrar and Marino.
  • Freshman Matt Jamer closed out the game for the Rams, allowing no runs and no hits over 1.1 innings, striking out two Explorers in the process.

We had good approach at the plate all day today, starting with Cody Acker leading things off for us with our seniors Joey Cujas and Bill Cullen continued that through the middle of the lineup.
