  HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After both clubs posted scoreless frames for the first four innings, VMI loaded the bases in the fifth. With the bases chucked, second baseman Jordan Tarsovich was hit by a pitch, to scoring right fielder Will Connerley for the first run of the game.
  • During the next at-bat center fielder Brandon Angus doubled to right-center field; the hit brought home two runs. A wild pitch on the subsequent at-bat allowed a fourth VMI run to score in the fifth inning.
  • Left fielder Eric Meyers ended the Keydets strong fifth inning with a single up the middle that allowed Angus to score, giving VMI a 5-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Matt Davis used an RBI single to plate the Rams first run of the day, scoring senior Bill Cullen from second base.
  • Two batters later, Marino singled up the middle and brought home Davis, closing the gap to 5-2.
  • With no outs and the bases loaded in the eighth inning, senior Joey Cujas hit a deep sacrifice fly to center field plating Marino and cutting the Keydets lead to two in the process.
  • Next to the plate, Machin knocked a sacrifice fly to left field that scored sophomore Cody Acker, cutting the deficit to one, 5-4.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Marino drove home the game tying run with a single up the middle.
  • VMI loaded the bases in the eleventh inning with one out, but a strikeout served up by junior Matt Lees and a groundout to short ended the frame with the score tied 5-5.
  • With two outs in the top of the twelfth inning, Tarsovich hit a bases-loaded triple to right center that scored all three runs, giving the Keydets an 8-5 lead in extras.
  • In the bottom of the twelfth, freshman Darian Carpenter hit a pinch-hit RBI single through the left side pulling the Rams within two, 8-6. With runners at the corners and two outs, VMI's Blaine Lafin got out of the jam to earn the Keydets 16th win of the year.

QUOTABLE

The guys are playing real hard and the effort is outstanding. We just don't have a very good formula put together to win games.

VCU Head Coach Shawn Stiffler

We have to get a little bit more out of our starting pitching and we have to throw more strikes throughout the game

I'm very impressed by the way we continued to battle the whole night. We continue to show heart each time out and I'm excited to get back at it this weekend.
