THE BASICS: Junior Daniel Concepcion pitched 6.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and striking out seven to earn the win for VCU. After being locked in a scoreless tie for the first four innings an RBI single from Joey Cujas broke the tie and allowed the Rams to coast to a 3-0 win over the Pirates.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Concepcion cruised through the first six innings, striking out six. During the span just five Pirates reached base, with two reaching on base hits.
  • In the fifth inning, sophomore Cody Acker reached base on a walk advancing to second on stolen base to move into scoring position. Senior Joey Cujas capitalized with a base hit through the right side of the ECU defense to plate the game's first run.
  • Neither team scored again until the eighth inning. In the frame senior atcher Chris Ayers got the scoring started for the Rams singling into centerfield. The Black and Gold replaced Ayers with freshman Alex Gransback as a pinch runner.
  • The Rams loaded the bases in the frame on a Bill Cullen single followed by a Matt Davis walk. With the bases full Logan Farrar came up to bat and the freshman drove in two runs with a two-RBI single into left field
  • VCU's three runs stood as Logan Kaniuk came on in relief to go 2.1 innings of shutout ball to earn the save.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • In just his second start of his career Daniel Concepcion shined for the Black and Gold giving the Rams a quality start in 6.2 innings and allowing no runs.
  • Freshman Alex Gransback made his first appearance as a Ram replacing Chris Ayers as a pinch runner in the eighth. Gransback later scored on a Logan Farrar RBI single.
  • Junior Logan Kanuik posted his first save of the season and just his second career save on the night.
  • After ending his 11-game hitting streak on Sunday, Joey Cujas posted his first multiple hit performance of the year going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • With Farrar's two-RBI single in the eighth the freshman registered his third multiple RBI game of his rookie campaign.
  • Sophomore James Bunn extended his hitting streak to five games with a single in the first inning.

QUOTABLE
It was a good win, East Carolina is a good team and they're going to continue to be a good team throughout the year.

Daniel Concepcion was outstanding, he threw a ton of strikes and had a good three or four pitch mix early on and he really gave us a chance to winand obviously Logan Kanuik was just as good on the back end.

Tyler Bolton was outstanding he did a really good job pitching our guys in and throwing breaking balls away which had a good mix on our guys. I thought it took a little while for us to adjust to that but we were able to adjust to it and get a win.
