NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Freshman Matt Davis wasted little time breaking onto the scene over the weekend. The infielder posted six hits, with three doubles, en route to being named the first Atlantic 10 Newcomer of the Week.
Friday, in his college debut against Radford Davis picked up a single in the seventh and didn't stop hitting the rest of the weekend.
The following day the newcomer went 4-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored against rival Old Dominion. Davis' two-out RBI double in the seventh started a rally that pushed VCU past its rival ODU. Davis scored the tying run in the inning as the Rams went on to take the game 6-3.
On Sunday the Mechanicsburg, Pa. native capped off the weekend with an RBI double in VCU's 5-3 win over ACC foe Georgia Tech.
After the first weekend Davis leads the team in average (.500), hits (6), doubles (3), total bases (9), runs scored (4), slugging percentage (.750) and on base percentage (.538).
Davis and the Rams return to action on Wednesday for their home opener against Old Dominion. First pitch in that contest is slated for 3 p.m. at The Diamond.
