RICHMOND, Va. – VCU senior pitcher Kyle Pelchy had planned on joining the Air Force following his graduation from VCU. Those plans have now changed for the right-handed pitcher, as he recently signed a free agent deal with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Yorktown, Va., native is set to play for the GCL Rays, of the Gulf Coast League in Charlotte, Florida.

In four seasons at VCU, Pelchy appeared in 69 career games, posted a 4.55 ERA, collected six saves and finished with a 10-8 record.  Pelchy was a versatile pitcher for the Black & Gold, performing various roles for the team during his four seasons: starting pitcher, relief pitcher, setup man and closer.

In 2012, Pelchy set career-highs for wins (four), games started (six), innings pitched (58.1) and strikeouts (36). The senior started the season as the Sunday starter, before being asked to come out of the bullpen over the last six weeks of the season, while helping guide the Rams to a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.

Pelchy and the GCL Rays next scheduled game is set for Monday at 6:30 p.m.
