THE FARM REPORT: THREE FORMER RAMS SHOWING THEIR SKILLS IN THE MINORS

By Andrew Phillips, VCU Athletic Communications Student Assistant

Ever since it was built in the 1980s, The Diamond has served as a pitstop for plenty of future big leaguers. Sure, it has served as the home for the Richmond Braves and the Richmond Flying Squirrels, but that's not what we're talking about.

We're talking about all the VCU baseball standouts that played inside the comfy confines on the Boulevard and then made their way into various levels of MLB organizations.

We also know that the Rams have some of the best fans in the country and always want to keep an eye on how former Rams are doing. I mean, those riveting games of solitaire, sudoku and even "word with friends" aren't going to play themselves.

Enter VCUathletics.com, where we will give you monthly updates on all the guys who donned the Black & Gold. They'll be two different updates, one will be update all the guys in "The Big Show" and the other will feature the guys living up it "Down on the Farm."

This edition, "The Farm Report, focuses on the three former Rams who are working hard, trying to earn their shot at "The Big Show."

SERGIO MIRANDA
HUNTSVILLE STARS/DOUBLE A (MILWAUKEE BREWERS)
SECOND BASEMAN

A quality bat finds a way to get into line-ups night in and night out, former Ram Sergio Miranda is a prime example of that fact. The former VCU second baseman has bounced around from position to position throughout his minor league tenure, but at the start of the 2011 campaign he has worked his way back to second base.

Miranda has seen his share of success at the plate this season for the Huntsville Stars. At times this season he has seen his average over the .400 mark. He has 32 base hits in 128 at bats with four doubles, and three triples.

The fifth-year pro is settling into his third season in the Milwaukee organization after being drafted by the Chicago White Sox out of VCU.

The Lynchburg, Va. native reached the Triple A level at the end of the 2009 season, and continues to look to make his way back on the road to the show.

JOE VAN METER
HICKORY CRAWDADS/CLASS A (TEXAS RANGERS)
RIGHT-HANDED PITCHER

It seems like just yesterday, that Joe Van Meter was hitting a clutch two run homer over the left field wall at UNC Wilmington to send the Rams to the NCAA Tournament. Today, Van Meter is still in North Carolina, but has a different job and that is getting outs for the Hickory Crawdads of the Texas Rangers' organization.

The Oyster Bay, N.Y. native is in his second season in the Rangers' organization, and has spent all of the 2011 in the Class A South Atlantic League. Van Meter is has two wins to his record along with two saves.

After his year with the Black and Gold a season ago, Van Meter went to the Arizona League before being promoted to Hickory at the end of last summer.
