GETTING TO KNOW: SOPHOMORE BRENNAN HUELSE
With VCU's academic calendar winding down to the end of the first semester, it will take no time before the VCU baseball team begins its workouts for the 2011 season, and its title defense of the 2010 CAA Championship.
Brennan Huelse, a left-handed reliever, was a key part of last year's success, and looks to be a key arm to come out of the Rams' 2011 bullpen. He recently sat down with VCU Athletic Communication Student Assistant Andrew Phillips to let us in on what he does with his time off the field.
AP: Why did you decide to come to VCU?
BH: I decided to come to VCU because initially out of high school I didn't plan on playing college ball, but when I heard Coach Stiffler needed a stud left-handed pitcher I figured I would come out of retirement. On a serious note I just missed playing baseball after not having played my freshman year at GMU, and it was VCU that was willing to give me the opportunity to play Division 1 baseball.
AP: Who inspired you the most to get involved with baseball?
BH: I would have to say my parents inspired me the most to play baseball considering I've been playing since I was five, I've always been into sports growing up, but baseball was always my true passion.
AP: Are there any professional baseball players that you model your game after, and why?
BH: I wouldn't say I model my game after anyone, but I would definitely compare myself to Cliff Lee since we both have nasty hammers.
AP: Who is the most famous person you have ever met?
BH: Unfortunately I have never met anyone famous.
AP: Top item on your holiday wish list?
BH: I think I'm going to ask Santa for a consistent changeup for a strike this year.
AP: Funniest thing you do in the bullpen to pass time during games?
BH: Well I like to pick on Mike Graham a lot down in the bullpen, that makes time go by pretty fast, but during the game I'm always paying attention. My eyes don't leave the field.
AP: One thing that most people don't know about you?
BH: Most people don't know that I grew up a military brat and lived in Japan for 3 years.
