RICHMOND, Va. – Former Virginia Commonwealth University third baseman Joe Van Meter was named to the University Division All-State Baseball team chosen by the Virginia College Sports Information Directors on Tuesday after producing one of the most successful seasons in school history.
Van Meter hit .434 during his final season with the Rams, which was the second-highest mark in the Colonial Athletic Association and second-best single season output in VCU history. The third-year standout also set the conference record with 108 hits, topped the school record of 76 RBI and collected 13 doubles, seven triples, 10 home runs, and 14 stolen bases.
Selected in the 21st round by the Texas Rangers in this year's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Van Meter was a First Team All-CAA selection and the CAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Performer. The Oyster Bay, N.Y., native also received All-Tournament recognition in VCU's trip to the NCAA Charlottesville Regional, while earning ABCA/Rawlings All-East Region Second Team honors.
