Ron Jones
Assistant Coach
It’s not easy for any former athlete to see their own school record be broken. It makes it a little easier when you are coaching the athletes that are knocking you out of the top spots.
Such is the case for VCU men’s track and field assistant coach Ron Jones, who is now entering his fifth season as a member of the Black and Gold coaching staff.
The Richmond, Va. native has anchored down recruiting in the Tri-Cities area for the Rams producing CAA Champions in Davion Lambert (Varina), James Frierson (Highland Springs) and DeAngelo Wilson (Prince Edward County).
In his four seasons with the Rams, he has overseen 17 different CAA champions, 22 different NCAA East Regional qualifiers and four NCAA Championship participants.
The highlight of his VCU coaching career came in 2006 when he helped the Rams capture it's second CAA title in school history and VCU has not finished out of the top three since then.
Jones is no stranger to donning the Black and Gold either as he is the current school record holder in five events and was a two-time NCAA provisional qualifier in the long jump and 200-meter during his outstanding four-year career at VCU from 1993-1996.
During his senior campaign, he was ranked 20th nationally in the long jump and was the 1996 Ram Award recipient.
After graduating from VCU in 1996, he spent one season with the Rams as a volunteer coach in the jumps before heading across town as an assistant coach with the University of Richmond for four years.
