BLACKSBURG, Va. – In the past week, Virginia Commonwealth University student-athletes have seen the transition to spring hit the Metro Richmond area.

This past weekend, the VCU men’s track and field did the same thing as the Rams concluded their 2008-2009 indoor season and are preparing for the transition to the outdoor season after posting several personal bests at this past weekend’s Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet.

“I was pleased with our effort this past weekend,” Head Coach Julian Spooner said. “We had several guys have career-best showings, which is always a good thing. We wanted to use this meet to transition to the outdoor season and I think we did just that.”

Sophomore Antonio Norvell (Portsmouth, Va.) continued his return from a nagging injury with two personal bests in the 60-meter dash (6.92) and the 200-meter dash (22.10).

“Antonio had an outstanding freshman season last year for us and we expect him to do the same this spring,” Spooner said. “To see him have two straight strong performances, it’s a good sign of things to come.”

One of the strongest areas for the Black & Gold this indoor season has been the distance runners and the success kept this past weekend as junior Piotr Dybas (Jaslo, Poland) earned a victory in the 3000-meter run with a personal best time of 8:28.77, while classmate Stephen Mutisya (Machakos, Kenya) finished third and sophomore John Vial (Glen Allen, Va.) stopped the clock in a personal best time of 8:43.77 for fifth place.

Freshman Tyler Simmons (Woodbridge, Va.) posted yet another best in the 800-meter with a seventh-place showing, crossing the line in 1:55.53.

“I can’t say enough about how much hard work our distance guys have put in,” Spooner said. “They are an unbelievably strong group of kids that love to go out and put in the work together. It is nice to see it paying off.”

Freshman Chris Kourlesis (Richmond, Va.) rounded out the all-around strong effort by the Rams with a personal best in the triple jump with a mark of 46’ ½”.

The Rams open up their spring season this upcoming weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational, beginning on Friday, March 20th.
