The Virginia Commonwealth University men’s track and field team has its eyes set on qualifying for the NCAA East Regionals.
That pursuit continued this past weekend at the UNC Elite Meet in Chapel Hill, N.C., and the New Captain’s Classic in Newport News, Va.
The Rams captured a first place finish in the 4x100 meter relay and sophomore Donnie Seward (Richmond, Va.) posted a first and second place mark at the New Captain’s Classic, while sophomore Antonio Norvell (Portsmouth, Va.) registered two top-10 finishes at the UNC Elite Meet.
“We had a pretty good weekend overall,” said head coach Julian Spooner. “This time of year, we are focusing on two things, trying to improve times and get ready for next year, and help get our guys qualified for regionals.”
Already having qualified for regional competition after posting a time of 41.49 in last month’s Colonial Athletic Association Championship, the 4x100 meter team of sophomores Brandon Allen (Trenton, N.J.), Allan Moody (Woodbridge, Va.) Norvell and Kyle Jones, finished the event in 41.70.
Seward wasn’t done, posting the top time in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 48.36 seconds. He narrowly missed a shot at a pair of first place finishes as he was second in the 200-meter dash with a pace of 21.74.
Norvell posted a fifth place mark in the 100-meter dash, crossing the line in 10.76 seconds and notched a 10th place finish in the 200-meter event with a time of 21.56, just .17 seconds shy of qualifying for regional action.
“Antonio ran really well the last couple of weeks but missed qualifying by less than a half of a second two weeks in a row now,” Spooner commented. “Next week at Georgia Tech, with a faster track, he’ll hopefully be able to secure a spot in regionals.”
The Rams will have one more shot at qualifying this Friday and Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., before heading to the NCAA East Regionals on May 29-30 in Greensboro, N.C.
