YOUTHFUL RAMS WRAP UP SEASON AT NCAA EAST REGIONALS

GREENSBORO, N.C. – A total of seven members of the Virginia Commonwealth University men’s track & field team competed against the best athletes on the East Coast this weekend at the NCAA East Regionals, hosted by North Carolina A&T.

The great sign for Rams fans: All seven of them will be back in the Black & Gold next year. Six of them have at least two years left.

“Of course you always hope to advance to the NCAA Championships, but as a coaching staff, we’re just really excited about the future of this program,” Head Coach Julian Spooner said. “We have talented guys in nearly every event for several years to come and for all of these guys to get the experience of being at regionals this early in their careers is huge.”

Leading the way was the 4x100 meter relay squad of sophomores Allan Moody (Woodbridge, Va.), Antonio Norvell (Portsmouth, Va.) and Brandon Allen (Trenton, N.J.), along with freshman Kyle Jones.

The squad clocked in at 41.10, good for 14th place, less than .20 seconds off of Syracuse’s time.

Freshman Ronnie Black (Newport News, Va.) concluded his outstanding debut season with a 17th-place finish in the high jump, clearing 6’ 8 ¾”.

Sophomore Brian Wallace (Portsmouth, Va.) topped athletes from Duke, Virginia, Penn and Pittsburgh in a 24th-place showing in the triple jump with a mark of 48’ 3 ½”.

Junior Piotr Dybas (Jaslo, Poland) was the final Ram to compete with a 22nd-place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line in 9:22.70.
