SVENSSON LEADS RAMS AT UVA INVITATIONAL
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Filip Svensson (Angelholm, Sweden) led the Virginia Commonwealth University men’s tennis at this past weekend’s UVA Invitational, as the second-year standout posted a perfect 2-0 record at the tournament.
Svensson started his weekend by battling past Zack Hunter from North Carolina, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in the first round of the B-Singles bracket. He capped off his solid weekend with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Dino Dell’Orto of Virginia.
Senior Thibaut Charron (Sens, France) returned for the first time since suffering an ACL injury in last year’s CAA Tournament and jumped right into the action, batting John Wolff of Wake Forest in a near three-hour match. Charron’s rust never showed, picking up the 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 victory. Unfortunately, there is no rest for the weary and he had to get right back at it and face top-60 ranked Chris Aumueller of Nebraska, dropping the match, 7-6, 6-1.
Junior Tim Johanssen (Hohenlockstedt, Germany) had a solid showing against top-notch competition, playing the second-ranked player in the country, John Patrick Smith, tough, before falling 6-3, 6-1. A nagging shoulder injury restricted the Ram newcomer in his match against Victor Melo of Middle Tennessee State, in which he was defeated 6-3, 6-2.
The Rams are back in action next weekend as they travel to Norfolk to participate in the Old Dominion Collegiate Invitational.
