MOSER ADVANCES TO SECOND ROUND OF DOUBLES AT WIMBLEDON

WIMBLEDON, England – Former Virginia Commonwealth University men’s tennis standout Frank Moser had already left England to return to Texas to play in a tournament.

But his stay in Texas was brief as Moser and his partner, Chris Guccione of Australia, were selected as a wild card in the Gentlemen’s Doubles of the 2009 Wimbledon Championship.

“It’s great to see your former players having success at the highest level,” VCU head coach Paul Kostin said. “Frank was always a hard worker and it’s nice to see that it is paying off for him.”

Moser and Guccione lost in the Qualifying Round India’s Prakash Amritraj and Pakistan’s Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, but after the call back earned a thrilling 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 7-5 victory over the German duo of Benjamin Becker and Rainer Schuettler.

The eighth-seeded pair of Lukasz Kubot of Poland and Oliver Marach of Austria proved to be too much, however, as Moser and Guccione’s run at Wimbledon was finally over in the second round.

Moser has now played in two of the three majors this year. The former Ram played in the French Open in late May.

A two-time All-American during his time at VCU, Moser helped the Rams earn a spot in the only National Championship Appearance in school history when the Black & Gold battled perennial power Stanford in the 2000 NCAA National Championship.

During his senior year in 2001, Moser teamed with Florian Marquardt to make a run into the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship.
