RAMS DOMINATE MONARCH COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL

NORFOLK, Va. – Just two tournaments into his Virginia Commonwealth University men’s tennis career, freshman Krisztin Krocsko (Budapest, Hungary) is already starting to turn some heads.

For the second straight tournament, he rolled through his competition, this time he captured the Monarch Collegiate Invitational Championship with a four straight victories.

His weekend started with straight set victories over Eric Shulman of Christopher Newport (6-1, 6-1) and Kris Muzalewski of Old Dominion (6-1, 6-3). Teammate Filip Svensson (Angelholm, Sweden) gave Krocsko his first real test, but the newcomer came out on top, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (9). His championship run concluded with a 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (1) victory over Toby Fanselow of Old Dominion, the tournament’s top seed.

Krocsko was just part of the Rams’ domination of the tournament with the Black & Gold taking three of the four semi-finalists spots.

Svensson rolled to straight set victories over the Old Dominion pair of Yakov Diskin (6-3, 6-1) and Banjamin Chomette (6-1, 6-4) before falling to Krocsko in the semi-finals. Sophomore C.J. Williams (Richmond, Va.) was the other semi-finalist, rolling to three straight victories before falling to Fanselow.

The doubles side of the tournament gave VCU the same results with both pairings reaching the semi-finals. Krocsko and Williams dominated their first two opponents before falling to Fanselow and Chomette of Old Dominion, 9-7.

Freshman Camil Salomon (Limoges, France) and Svensson teamed up for a victory over Ricky Connor and Lorenzo Sison of Christopher Newport, 8-1, before falling to Gian Heyer and Eric Shulman of Christopher Newport.

The Rams are back in action in two weeks when they participate in the ODU Classic, beginning on Friday, Oct. 2nd.
