FAIRFAX, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University men’s soccer team has always had tough battles with the Patriots of George Mason. That trend continued on Saturday evening as George Mason pulled out a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both squads.

For 87 of the 90 minutes of action between the Virginia Commonwealth University men’s soccer team and the George Mason Patriots, the two teams were scoreless with all three goals coming in a 2:19 span. Unfortunately, for the Rams, George Mason scored two of those goals.

The loss drops the Black and Gold to 4-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the CAA, while the Patriots improve to 5-2-1 on the year and 1-0-0 in conference play.

George Mason dominated the first half of action with a 6-1 advantage over VCU in shots and 4-0 edge in corner kicks, but the score remained tied 0-0 heading into the intermission.

VCU came out of the locker room aggressive unleashing five shots in the first 20 minutes of the second half.

Even with all the Rams pressure, Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe got loose down the left sideline and found the back of the net to put George Mason up 1-0 in the 66th minute of action.

Just over two minutes later, senior midfielder Gerson Dos Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) dribbled around defenders and sent a beautiful feed to junior Owusu Sekyere (Suame-Kumasi, Ghana) who blasted a shot into an open net to even the game at 1-1.

The Patriots responded almost instantaneously as Draymond Washington assisted on a goal by Anthony Han just 18 seconds later to give George Mason a 2-1 advantage.

VCU would continue the offensive pressure with an 11-6 edge in shots in the second half, but the Rams were not able to find the equalizer.

The two teams were dead even in shots at 12-12 and corner kicks at 5-5. VCU held a slight advantage in shots on goal at 5-4.

The Rams are back in action next Saturday as they host the Pride of Hofstra University in a 7 p.m. contest at VCU”s Sports Backers Stadium.
