BLACKSBURG, Va. – The depth of the Virginia Commonwealth University men’s cross country squad was on display on Friday evening as the Rams ran through tough weather conditions to earn a second-place finish at the Virginia Tech Relays.

The relays consisted of a pair of runners who teamed up and ran two legs of 4,000-meters. The top three duos that crossed the line for each squad counted for team scoring.

The dangerous one-two punch of junior Stephen Mutisya (Machakos, Kenya) and senior Jay Wyss (Richmond, Va.) continued to exhibit their talent grabbing a third-place finish with a combined time of 49:34.

Freshman Tyler Simmons (Woodbridge, Va.) continued to impress teaming with senior Joey Wingo (Richmond, Va.) for a 12th-place finish and a combined time of 52:27.

Just four seconds behind their teammates were junior Piotr Dybas (Jaslo, Poland) and sophomore John Vial (Glen Allen, Va.) who rounded out the scoring for the Rams with a 13th-place finish.

“We’re continuing to improve and that’s the important part this time of year,” Head Coach Julian Spooner said. “It was a different type of meet that challenged our guys and I’m very pleased with the way we ran this weekend.”

The Rams return to the course next Saturday afternoon as they travel to Annapolis, Md. to compete in the Navy Invitational.
