RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University men’s basketball head coach Shaka Smart will be hosting three sessions of individual camp, as well as a one-day team camp this summer.
Individual camp sessions are scheduled for June 22nd-26th, July 13th-17th and July 27th-31st. The one-day team camp is scheduled for Saturday, June 27th. All camps will be held at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
The main objective of the Shaka Smart Basketball Camp is to stress the fundamentals of basketball – dribbling, shooting, passing, conditioning, agility, rebounding, defense and the fast break, while stressing the importance of hard work and becoming a well-rounded person.
Each camper will come away from their experience at the Shaka Smart Basketball Camp with a better understanding of the basketball fundamentals, improved individual skills and the understanding of the team concept.
Considered one of the brightest young minds in the Division I ranks today, Smart was named the 10th coach in VCU men’s basketball history on April 2nd. He comes to the Black & Gold after spending last year as an assistant on the University of Florida coaching staff.
Last season, Smart helped the Gators to a 25-11 mark, the fifth most in school history, and a berth in the NIT Quarterfinals. Prior to Florida, Smart served as an assistant coach under Oliver Purnell at Clemson from 2006-08. During his tenure, Smart helped the Tigers to 49 wins and back-to-back postseason appearances, including an NCAA Tournament berth in 2008.
Smart played his college basketball at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio and graduated magna cum laude in 1999 with a degree in history. A four-year starter and three-year captain, he holds Kenyon single season (184) and a career (542) assist marks. As a senior, he was an All-North Coast Conference selection and was the NCAC Scholar Athlete of the Year. He was one of 20 students selected for the 1999 USA Today All-USA Academic team and received a NCAA postgraduate scholarship. |
