Tony Pujol
Assistant Coach
Tony Pujol is entering his third season as an assistant coach under Anthony Grant at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Prior to joining VCU, Pujol served as an assistant coach at Appalachian State after spending 13 years as a high school head coach in south Florida. In his two seasons at ASU (2004-06), Pujol helped the Mountaineers to a 32-28 overall record, including a 21-5 mark at the Holmes Center, an even 15-15 mark in Southern Conference play, and back-to-back appearances in the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals. Pujol was also instrumental in obtaining the Mountaineers’ Public Recognition Award, based on the program’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) data released by the NCAA. The awards recognize programs whose APR scores rank among the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sport.
Prior to his arrival at ASU, Pujol spent nine years as the head coach of Northwest Christian Academy in Miami, compiling an impressive 250-46 overall record. His team made five Florida state final four appearances, winning titles in 1999, 2003, and 2004. He garnered state coach of the year honors in each of his championship seasons.
Prior to joining the Northwest staff, Pujol served as the head coach of La Progresiva Presbyterian School for three years, advancing to the state finals and earning his first coach of the year citation in 1995.
Pujol is a 1989 graduate of Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas where he obtained a degree in business management. A dual-sport athlete for the Warriors, Pujol competed for both the baseball and basketball squads (1985-89), earning baseball all-conference honors during his last two seasons (1988-89). A native of Miami, Fla., Pujol and his wife, Mayle, have three daughters: Kasey (10), Kristen (8), and Mia (3).
