Allen Edwards
Assistant Coach
Allen Edwards is entering his third year as an assistant coach under Anthony Grant at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Edwards made his way to VCU via Morehead State, where he served as an assistant coach for three seasons (2003-06).
Edwards, a four-year letterwinner at Kentucky, was a member of two national championship teams and a participant in three Final Fours. He helped the Wildcats to a 132-16 overall record during his tenure, including three SEC regular season titles and three SEC Tournament crowns.
During his senior season with Kentucky in 1997-98, Edwards helped spur the Wildcats to the national title, averaging 9.2 points, 3.3 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game. Edwards was also a key reserve during Kentucky’s 1995-96 national championship campaign, scoring 3.3 points per contest.
He is still listed among Kentucky’s all-time assist leaders with 285 career distributions. Edwards played nearly every position during his four years at Kentucky, under both Rick Pitino and former VCU assistant coach Tubby Smith.
Following his collegiate playing career, Edwards went on to compete professionally in the CBA and IBL before returning to Kentucky to complete his degree in sociology in December 2002.
Prior to his playing days at Kentucky, Edwards was a prep star, earning Florida’s Mr. Basketball award during his final season at Miami Senior High School. It was also during his high school days that Edwards crossed paths with VCU Head Coach Anthony Grant for the first time. Grant was an assistant coach at Miami Senior from 1987-92.
Edwards, a native of Miami, Fla., is married to LaTanya Edwards. The couple two children, eight-year old daughter, Mai’a and a one-year-old son, Jaxon.
