Former VCU Volleyball standout Mariel Frey made the transition from the court to the sidelines in 2011 as an undergraduate assistant coach. Frey enjoyed a successful four-year career for Head Coach James Finley’s Rams from 2007-10.
A veteran of more than 125 collegiate matches, Frey’s experience in the collegiate arena will be a welcome addition to Finley’s staff. A 5-11 outside hitter, Frey compiled 989 career kills, good for fifth on VCU’s all-time list.
Frey, selected co-captain by her teammates, enjoyed her finest campaign in a VCU uniform in 2010, averaging a team-best 2.54 kills per set. She tacked on 2.11 digs and 0.64 blocks per set, while recording a team-high 35 service aces. For her efforts, Frey was selected to the All-Colonial Athletic Association Second Team.
As a junior in 2009, Frey averaged a personal-best 2.66 kills and 2.88 digs per set as the Rams finished 27-9 and captured their first CAA regular season championship. That year, Frey earned a CAA All-Tournament Team citation, as well as All-Tournament Team at the VCU/Third Degree Sportswear Invitational and CAA Player of the Week (Aug. 31).
A native of Lititz, Pa., Frey is majoring in elementary education.
