Reinaldo Brenes joins the VCU men’s soccer coaching staff as a Graduate Assistant for the 2017 season.
“Reina will make an excellent addition to our staff as a Graduate Assistant,” Head Coach Dave Giffard said. “He was an incredibly hard working player and student and understands what a championship culture is all about from the perspective of a player.”
Brenes won a national championship with Akron during his freshman season in 2010, playing alongside U.S. Men’s National Team members Darlington Nagbe and Perry Kitchen, and current Major League Soccer players Darren Mattocks, Kofi Sarkodie and Chris Korb. Caleb Porter, who currently manages the Portland Timbers, coached the team.
After playing for the Zips from 2010-13, Brenes was drafted by Sporting Kansas City in 2014. In 2015, he returned to his native Costa Rica to play for the dominant Deportivo Saprissa. He spent the 2016 season with Belen FC, which also plays in the Costa Rican top tier.
An NSCAA All-American striker, Brenes also played for Costa Rica’s U17 and U18 National Teams.
