VCU’S GRIFFIN EARNS SECOND CAA GOLFER OF THE WEEK AWARD

For the second time this fall, Virginia Commonwealth University junior Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg, VA) has been named golfer of the week by the Colonial Athletic Association.
Griffin finished in a three-way tie for third at 11-under-par in this week’s VCU Shootout at Hermitage Country Club. The trio was only one shot out of the top spot.

For the season, Griffin has a second-, third and fifth-place finish on his record.

Griffin had rounds of 67, 66 and 69 in the VCU Shootout. He started slowly in the final round and was 2-over-par for his first nine holes. But he made up five shots to par over the next eight holes to move into contention and help lift the Rams into a tie for second with Augusta State. Wake Forest won the event.

“I just got off to a tough start,” Griffin said after the Shootout. “Then I hit No. 2 (his 10th hole of the day) in two, blew it by eight feet and made that coming back for birdie. That kind of jump started me. The putter warmed up.

“I’m proud of the way I came back. My goal at the start of the year was to get a win and this was a very good opportunity. It is disappointing but at the same time it was a good tournament.”

Griffin was also named CAA golfer of the week on Sept. 10 after leading VCU to a runner-up finish in the Maryland Intercollegiate tournament. The VCU Shootout was the Rams’ first tournament since.
