VCU’S SAUDER, VAN DESSEL EARN ALL-CAA NODS
11/03/07
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University junior Megan Sauder (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and freshman Flore van Dessel (Oisterwijk, The Netherlands/Odulphus Lyceum) each received All-Colonial Athletic Association honors Friday night at the annual league banquet.
Sauder, a 5-7 defender, earned an All-CAA Second Team citation after serving as the catalyst for the much improved Rams. This season, Sauder spearheaded a defense that allowed 2.22 goals per game, a marked improvement over 2006, when VCU allowed an average of 3.68 each time out. Sauder also recorded one assist this season.
Much like Sauder’s role on defense, van Dessel served a similar one for the Rams’ offensive attack. Van Dessel, one quarter of VCU’s talented group Dutch freshmen, was tabbed for the CAA’s All-Rookie Team Friday. This season, van Dessel set the stage for many of the Rams’ scoring opportunities and was credited with five assists.
Under first-year Head Coach Kelly McQuade, VCU was one of the most-improved teams in the CAA. The Rams posted five victories in 2007, and narrowly missed out on several upsets, including four one-goal losses to teams ranked in the top 20.
