RICHMOND, Va. - While the VCU Athletic Department was highly successful on the field and in the classroom this past fall, one of the greatest success came in the community as the 270-plus student-athletes helped raise over $1,500 for the VCU Massey Cancer Center.
The VCU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee used the "Meet the Rams, Make a Change" event in December to raise money by collecting spare change from fellow students and members of the Richmond community all in the name of VCU Massey Cancer Center.
"This community does such a great job of supporting all of our athletic programs and this was just a small way for all of us to come together and help a great cause," Junior and VCU men's basketball student-athlete D.J. Haley said.
SAAC President Corey Scott (Men's Track & Field) and his fellow committee members are making a big push to become more involved with the local community and felt that this was a great first step.
"We all thought it was a pretty successful for the most part and thought it was a great first event for us," Scott said. "We hope to continue to do a lot of great community service events like this, we really want to put a focus on the community that supports all of Ram Nation."
In all, the effort raised $1,616.35 for the VCU Massey Cancer Center.
