In just over 10 years of existence, VCU's
SportsBackers Stadium has already hosted more prestigious events
than some facilities do in a lifetime.
In addition to serving as the home facility for VCU men's and
women's soccer and track & field teams, the facility has played
host to the USA Track & Field Junior National Championships,
the CAA Track & Field Championships, four NCAA tournament
soccer games and the Virginia High School Track & Field
Championships.
The facility officially opened on Wednesday, August 25, 1999
with construction of skyboxes, a two-tier press box and offices
completed in the Spring of 2001.
On the south side of the facility is a dual purpose building with
a oversized storage shed on one side and a training room for VCU's
elite athletic training staff on the other.
The facility also houses a bevy of restrooms, two concession
stands and three locker rooms.
For Soccer:
With over 3,000 quality seats available, SportsBackers can quickly
turn into an elite soccer environment, just ask anyone who watched
the Rams battle Virginia Tech in the 2004 NCAA Quarterfinals when
fans were being turned away due to capacity being reached.
The two-tier press box and luxury skybox provides plenty of space
and amenities to host some of the nation's top events. It also has
a host of restrooms, three locker rooms and a storage fa
Women's Soccer Co-Head Coach Tim Sahaydak:
"There are several soccer facilities that have a lot of the great
looks on the outside, but the surface is beat up or vice versa.
SportsBackers brings both together with a fantastic playing surface
and great looks on the outside with the grandstand and press box.
We hope to continue to build it into a stellar soccer
environment."
For Track & Field:
The eight-lane Richard A. Hollander Track received a fresh
recoating during the 2010 summer months and is fresh for the Rams
and some of the nation's top track & field athletes. The
48-inch wide lanes with Martin surfacing, along with a full
compliment of throwing facilities provide an ideal facility for
hosting meets.
Head Track & Field Coach Jon Riley on
SportsBackers:
"With the recent resurfacing, it is one of the best track
facilities in the surrounding area. It's already hosted many
prominent meets, and a lot of big names have competed there. It is
a good, fast track. It helps in recruiting a lot because so many of
the high school athletes are familiar with it from competing
there."
