ERIE, Pa. – The average temperature in Erie, Pa., this time of year is just below 60 degrees.
This spring, it’s been a little warmer thanks to the red hot start that former Virginia Commonwealth University baseball star Scott Sizemore is off to with the Erie Seawolves, the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.
After spending most of the off-season rehabbing from a wrist injury, Sizemore has played in all 44 games for the Seawolves in 2009.
The Chesapeake, Va., native leads the team with a .306 batting average, 53 hits and six stolen bases, along with ranking second in doubles with 13, runs with 29, home runs with eight, walks with 25 and RBIs with 29.
In the Eastern League, Sizemore ranks in the top-10 in every offensive statistical category, including leading the league with 53 hits.
After being taken in the fifth round of the 2006 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Tigers, Sizemore has consistently been ranked as one of the organization’s top prospects and he has not disappointed at any level.
In three-plus minor league seasons, he has racked up a .291 batting average in nearly 300 games played. He has bashed 19 home runs, scored 187 runs and driven in 134 RBIs.
While with the Rams, the second baseman was one of the most prolific hitters to ever don a Black & Gold uniform, ranking in the top-10 in all, but two offensive categories.
His 2005 season of a .364 batting average, 12 home runs and 56 RBIs helped VCU claim the Colonial Athletic Association and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
