RICHMOND, Va. – The temperature may be dropping outside, but the “Boys of Summer” are just starting to heat up as the Virginia Commonwealth University baseball team released its 2009 schedule this afternoon.

VCU will enjoy some home-cooking for the first half of the schedule with 14 of the first 18 games slated at home for the Black and Gold, a place where it has averaged over 20 wins per season over the past 10 years.

A 6:30 p.m. contest on February 20th at Central Florida kicks off the 2009 schedule, followed by three more games against the Knights before heading back to The Diamond.

Four games against the Blackbirds of Long Island opens up a 14-game home stand with Liberty, Fordham, Stony Brook, Canisus and Massachusetts all paying visits to The Diamond.

The Black and Gold then hit the road to open up Colonial Athletic Association play against perennial power UNC Wilmington on March 20-22.

Head Coach Paul Keyes and the Rams pay a visit to an old friend the following weekend as they travel to Bowling Green, Ky. to take on former VCU assistant Chris Finwood and his Western Kentucky Hilltoppers from March 27-29.

It is all about CAA play from then on with home weekends against defending champ James Madison, Hofstra, Old Dominion and George Mason.

The in-state rivalry games heat up the mid-week schedule with Virginia (Apr. 21 and May 12), Richmond (Apr. 15 and May 5) and VMI (Mar. 31 and Apr. 7) all taking part in a home-and-home series with the Rams.
